UK County searches

Family research is more than putting names and dates onto paper.

As you get to know your ancestors you will most likely want to know more about them - where they lived, what jobs they did, were they wealthy?, did they leave a Will?, did they end their lives in the Poor House?, what was the world like in their times?, and much more.

You most probably know the town and county they lived in, and it's well worth-while finding which parish they came from. If you have certificates, this information will be detailed there.

There are many records available at Parish-level, and I have created a page for each English County, with links to Parish Records where I can find them.

Each page is divided into two sections: 'All of County', and 'Local Records & Resources'.

All of County

This section contains information relating to the County as a whole - its history, parishes, towns, maps, county genealogical & family history societies, for instance.

Much of this information is vital to understanding and helping you to decide where you want to go next in your search.

For instance, over the years many counties have changed their boundaries, and some counties that existed 200 years or so ago don't exist today. Knowing the story of these changes, and how to find where parishes are today could save you many hours of fruitless research time.

For a detailed explanation of parishes and other geographical divisions of the country, read this excellent article here.

Local Records & Resources

This section contains transcriptions & resources specific to local areas - parishes, towns, schools, churches, workplaces, etc.

It may also contain links to local history societies; in fact, any sites that I feel there is valuable information, either in terms of transcriptions, or of interest to a family researcher in that geographic area.

An ongoing project

This is a long-term and ongoing project, and I will update the pages as often as I can. I am constanty seeking new, informative & interesting sites. If you find links that you think should be listed here, please recommend them by way of the 'Contact' button at the top of the page.

If you have a website yourself that contains local information and resources, please contact me if you would like me to link to it.

Likewise with broken links. I check as many as I can, as regularly as I can, but sites come and go so often that I do miss them at times. Please report broken links if you find them - I will place a specific link for this purpose on these pages shortly.

This project is new, commencing January 2009. Most of the pages have a selection of resources available, but if your County doesn't have the records you are looking for, come back and visit again.

Now choose your county..............
