Home Support this site

The majority of links on this website will take you directly to FREE sites. My favourites are here, and for more local records, try these.

What Do I Mean By FREE Sites?

I mean completely FREE!

Sites where you can search and see either transcribed records and/or original images FREE, without subscription, and without paying to view individual images.

If you've spent any time surfing the internet, you will no doubt have followed links to sites that entice you with a 'Free Search'. Exactly that, usually - just a Free Search. Then you have to buy a subscription or pay to see your image.

Not from this site.

There are many people and organisations dedicated to making genealogical records available to all without charge, and it is my aim to seek as many out as I can, and link to them on this site.

Find bmd records, parish registers, Bishop's Transcripts and more here.

Do Subscription Sites Have A Place?

Yes, they do.

Not all the information you need can be found free-of-charge.

In the later stages of your research, and for those who are more serious about their ancestry, it is likely that you will choose to join one of the major subscription sites.

They are invaluable if time is limited, as they hold billions of records in one place, many of them searchable together.

Their databases are generally more complete than free sites, too.

However, for basic information such as birth, marriage and death indexes, census records and a variety of other information, free sites are an excellent and invaluable starting point.

Other Sources

There are other sources of searchable information which may require a membership.

These include local or national Family History Societies, Archaelogical Societies, Genealogical Societies, etc. They tend to be more specialised, providing indepth records for more serious researchers, often not available elsewhere.

Where links are not directly to free sites I will indicate this in the accompanying text.

Go to the Home Page and begin your research, or choose your next step from the side-bar menu.
